So Many Scores so Little Time

There are lots of different credit scores offered on the web. If you are starting a credit repair program you may want to benchmark your scores. So you are likely to go online, pick out a website and pay the price. Unfortunately, the odds are that the scores you purchase will have no resemblance to the scores a lender will use to underwrite a loan.

The Real Scores

There is only one website where you can purchase the same scores lenders use; this is MyFico.com, the website for Fair Isaac Corp the developer of the FICO scoring model. As a credit repair consultant it is a matter of daily consternation to me that the same credit bureaus that sell these important FICO scores directly to lenders will not sell FICO scores to consumers.

The Wrong Scores

You can purchase credit scores from Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion, but they are not FICO scores, and therefore of no real credit repair value. These credit bureau scores are of their own creation and exist solely for the purpose of cashing in on the ignorance of consumers. I cannot imagine any scenario where there would be no moral culpability on the part of the bureaus.

No Practical Application

I have heard it said that although these bureau scores are not the same as FICO scores they are a way for consumers to track changes in their reports. This is not so. The bureau scores just don’t behave the same way. In other words, changes in your credit affect your FICO scores differently that they do the bureau scores. These bureau scores have no practical application, for credit repair or otherwise.

The Equifax Exception

For the record, Equifax offers the only credit repair friendly credit score. In fact, they do offer a FICO score. They currently use a previous generation of the software, and they only apply it to their own data, but it will generate a close approximation of your real score and generally behaves the same and could be used to monitor credit repair progress.

Measuring Credit Repair Progress

Unfortunately, this one credit bureau nod to integrity does not provide an optimal credit repair solution. You should know that many lenders, and all mortgage lenders, purchase all three FICO scores and use the middle of the three scores. An accurate measure of your credit repair status requires all three scores.

Ask Your Lender for Your Reports

Given that lenders are able to purchase FICO score from the credit bureaus, you may have a roundabout way of getting your hands on a real tri-merged report with all three FICO scores. If you recently applied for a mortgage you may consider contacting your lender and asking for a copy of your report. Tri-merged mortgage credit reports are usually quite detailed and ideal for credit repair purposes.

Bend the Rules Just a Bit

By the book, lenders are not supposed to provide copies of reports directly to consumers. This is standard boiler plate language included in lender agreements with their report provider. The Fair Credit Reporting Act includes an information sharing clause; in the case of credit denial consumers are entitled to a copy of their reports, but this is a hassle compared with calling your lender and asking for the small favor.

Credit Repair and Your Reports

If you want your credit scores to establish a starting point for your credit repair effort I should say a bit more. If you go to MyFico.com to purchase your credit scores they will come complete with your three credit reports. Unfortunately, as if happens, even though Fair Isaac is the only source for your scores, they do a terrible job on the credit reports.

Fair Isaac Report Problems

MyFico.com credit reports are edited to the point of being useless for credit repair purposes. This is especially true if you intend to investigate all the information that should be available on your reports. Fair Isaac reports are highly sterilized, and in many cases actually exclude your account numbers, which you may need for your credit repair effort. So, for credit repair purposes you should get your reports from the credit bureaus. Phew!

Making Do

If it all seems crazy and unfair remember that the credit bureaus have the credit data, and Fair Isaac owns the credit scoring software. Everyone wants to make money and until they figure out a better way to work together we just have to make do as best as we can. Good luck!

I know part of your credit score is determined by how much available credit you have. How big should a business be before the owner finally delegates responsibilities?
I am in the family business and my mom is clearly strained… We are blessed to have business hand over fist even in this recession but that is not my problem, or question… My question is how can a small business owner learn to lay back enjoy the fruits of their labor??? I mean she has owned this insurance agency for 30 yrs. and has nursed it from ONE policy to what it is today? But her health is declining as she is still trying to take payments, pictures of homes, etc. on what should be considered now at least a "mid sized" business?

There are two distinct ways to deal with consumer debt. First, you may want to consider reducing the principal balance on a current loan, or even take this step with multiple loans. Paying a bit more than the minimum required and having that amount applied to the principal is one small way to reduce debt in the long run. It may be wise to look into the specific loans you have, take a close look at your budget, then see if there are ways to reduce the amounts owed on the various loans.

Another very popular option is debt consolidation. With debt consolidation, you can reduce your monthly payments by placing several loans under one all-purpose consolidation loan agreement with one lender. In addition to simplifying expenses and optimizing your budget, reducing your payment can help your overall credit profile, since debt burden is measured by comparing your loan payment as a percentage in relation to your total income.

Debt (the amount of money owed to a bank, credit union or individual lender) is composed of just a few pieces. Simply put, debt is calculated by the amount borrowed, plus the interest charged for the privilege of borrowing said money, and usually some final additional administration and bookkeeping charges. Tip: Be sure to include changes in interest and additional finance charges when figuring the cost of new loans and/or consolidation loans.

When considering debt consolidation in any situation it is best to also understand the difference between secured debt, such as home mortgage loans, and unsecured debt, such as credit card bills. With the original loans or a consolidation loan, if you are able to make the payments and don’t have trouble with late-payment penalties, you are managing your debt fairly well. But if you miss payments, the lender will have to take some action.

It is at this point that the difference between a secured loan and an unsecured loan can be crucial. With a secured loan, the lender may be able to take your property if you don’t keep up with payments according to the agreement. Most lenders are willing to work with you if they believe you are acting in good faith. A lender may even be willing to reduce or suspend your payments for a short time. When you resume regular payments, though, you may have to pay an additional amount toward the past due total to get back on track.

If you have unsecured loans, your credit rating will suffer and you will not be able to get future credit or loans easily. But, since there is no collateral to take, the debt may be discharged if your financial problems lead to bankruptcy. This certainly does not mean that unsecured debt is the best way to go. In fact, to get unsecured personal loans you will have to have an extremely good credit history and, generally, proof of sufficient income. Making the choice between a secured loan and an unsecured loan depends entirely on the individual situation and be considered carefully.

There are other bumps in the debt consolidation road that can cause trouble if they are not understood from the beginning. The existence of several loans with high interest rates may lead you to think that debt consolidation is an easy answer. But keep in mind that lenders offering debt consolidation may charge high interest rates and significant late-payment penalties for those who already have trouble keeping up with current payments. (This may be necessary precisely because consolidators are working with problem borrowers.) With one high interest rate rather than two or three your monthly payment is lower but, in the long run, you pay more in total.

One of the key reasons for consolidating debt in recent years has been the rise in credit card debt, which often comes with interest rates that are considerably higher than with other loans, mortgages etc. People can build credit card debt because they spend more than their income, buying luxury items (or even things they feel are necessary), hoping to be able to pay off the amount borrowed with future earnings.

Debt consolidation can help in many cases, though a change in spending habits is advisable so that new credit card debt is avoided in the future. In fact, almost every reputable debt management counselor will advise treating the real cause of debt problems; the lax underlying spending and saving habits of its customers. To most of these professionals, debt is a symptom of other problems that must first be addressed.

If you have built up a lot of credit card debt or your particular situation has made it necessary to get two or more loans (and you want to simplify things with one monthly payment), personal property such as a home or car may allow you to get a lower interest rate. Using a home or other valuable property as collateral allows you to work with a bank or other lender to get a secured loan. In some cases, the total interest and the total cash flow paid towards the debt is lower, allowing the debt to be paid off sooner, incurring less interest. Because the property is a “guarantee” for the loan, the lender may offer a lower interest rate, more agreeable payment schedule and fewer extra fees and charges. (However, keep in mind the difference between secured and unsecured loans.)

Any debt consolidation plan, whether it is a home equity loan, unsecured loan with a credit card company or even a personal loan, can add to debt problems rather than help solve these same problems. That is why it is very important to take time, from the beginning, to figure all the costs for the entire period of any loan. Debt consolidation can be the answer to financial problems, if it is managed properly in the correct situation.

Getting out of debt is not easy, but you can do it, you just need a plan.

business projector versus a home theater projector? Is there that much of a difference in black levels?
I am budgeting about 500-600 for the project and about 100 for the screen. I can afford a 2000 projector.

A ViewSonic PJ506D SVGA (800×600) 4:3/16:9 2000 lumens business projector is going for 500 with a mail free screen and mount offer.

An InFocus In72 WVGA (852×480) 900 lumens home theater projector is going for about the same refurbished with no extras.

I have read that I really should get a home theater projector rather than a business projector like the 506D, but the lumens scares me.

I am projecting on an 80"screen with blinds and curtains closed. no lights. still some ambient light.

Which will be better. I am going to use it the a really nice DVD player, Wii and Home theater PC. No interest in HD DVDs for atleast 3-4 years when I will prob upgrade this anyway.
